SW: Years in Business:
JD: The Award Center is a family owned business that has been located in the Southside of downtown Birmingham in the UAB area since 1990.
SW: What makes your business unique?
JD: We specialize in awards and trophies, but what sets us apart from many other similar businesses besides quality, is our customer service and fast turnaround.
SW: What is the funniest or wildest thing that has ever happened or you have found on your property?
JD: The wildest thing I remember is the dumpster floating down the alley. It had rained so hard so fast there was no where else for the water to go, and it just picked up the dumpster.
SW: Where would you like to see your business in three years?
JD: Busier than ever before with additional customers due to new businesses in the area and lots of foot traffic.
SW: What do you enjoy most about your business?
JD: Our customers, who give us the opportunity to be creative. From the individual who needs a piece of jewelry engraved, to the UAB corporate awards program directors and the long-time customers who have been coming to The Award Center for 20+ years.
SW: Any interesting company traditions or facts?
JD: Our dad started the business over 50 years ago. He and my brother worked together for over 35 years. The business itself is a long family tradition with very close family ties.
SW: What do you like most about your new location (they recently moved into SW’s new development)?
JD: Just being in the neighborhood with so much growth, and of course, being in UAB’s backyard. Proximity is huge.
SW: What makes Shannon Waltchack stand out from other Commercial Real Estate firms?
JD: They seem to have entered the Birmingham market and are already top players, ambitious and determined to make a stake in the city.
